Why essential amino acids are so important to get enough of.
Because the body cannot produce the essential amino acids itself, they must be supplied through diet and/or supplements.
There are nine of them, including leucine, isoleucine, valine (BCAA), lysine and more, each of which plays a crucial role in the body's protein building, growth, muscle repair and immune function.
When the body does not get enough of one or more essential amino acids, it cannot form the necessary proteins – even if the other amino acids are present. This means that the entire synthesis process is blocked and health, recovery and growth are inhibited.
How do essential amino acids specifically contribute to our health?
Muscle growth and recovery
For example, leucine has a unique role: it activates the mTOR signaling pathway, which stimulates protein synthesis and helps muscles grow and repair after exercise.
Energy and metabolism
Amino acids such as alanine and aspartate contribute to the cells' energy and metabolism - and also support the production of enzymes and hormones.
Immune system
Essential amino acids are building blocks for important immune proteins and enzymes that help fight disease and support the body's defenses against stress and infections.
Why most Danes lack them
An article from Berlingske points out that some Danes – including those with a normal diet – do not get sufficient amounts of essential amino acids.
Berlingske: Some Danes don't get enough essential amino acids
There are several reasons, but among them are the busy everyday life, a more plant-based diet (which is often lower in certain essential amino acids), and the fact that many people do not reach the recommended daily intake of proteins.
Subsidies as extra security – why and when
Even with a relatively healthy and varied diet, it can be difficult to fully meet the needs – especially when you are busy, have dietary restrictions (vegetarian/vegan), are aging or have a high training load. Here, supplements can ensure that all essential building blocks are present in the right ratio.
A comprehensive supplement with essential amino acids, proteins, vitamins, minerals and fatty acids acts as “risk insurance” for nutritional deficiencies, and supports optimized health and recovery.
