“Remember to drink water!” – but why?

Water is not just a thirst quencher. You can survive for weeks without food – but only a few days without fluids. Water is fundamental to the functioning of your body – from the brain to digestion. It is especially important in the summer to be aware of your body’s need for fluids. When the sun is baking and your body sweats to cool down, you lose not only water but also important salts – and you need to compensate for that.

Why is water so important?

Water makes up about 60% of your body weight and plays a crucial role in:

  • To transport oxygen and nutrients around the body
  • To regulate your body temperature
  • To lubricate your joints and keep mucous membranes and skin moist
  • To support digestion and eliminate waste products through urine and sweat

Even mild dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, and difficulty concentrating.

How much should you drink?

It is recommended that you get about 2 liters of fluid per day, but it depends on your age, activity level, diet and not least the temperature. Remember that you also get fluids from food – especially fruit and vegetables.

👉 Have you been exercising? Then you should drink more.
👉 Is it hot? Then you should drink more.
👉 Have you been sweating a lot? Then consider also getting some salt, which helps the body retain fluid. (Put 1 tsp. salt in your water).

The most important thing is that you listening to your body – thirst is a signal, but it often comes too late. Drink water even if you don't feel thirsty.

When and how should you drink?

A good piece of advice is to drink small amounts of water evenly distributed throughout the dayFor example, start with a glass of water in the morning and continue between meals. Avoid drinking too much with meals – it can dilute stomach acid and negatively affect digestion.

Tap water, groundwater and spring water – which is best?

Denmark has some of the cleanest drinking water in the world. Most of it is clean groundwater, which does not require purification. This means that tap water is both sustainable, cheap and healthy – and in fact recommended by many professionals. As geologist Niels Kelstrup has explained: “Spring water is really just groundwater bottled.”

You don't need to buy bottled water – unless you're on the go without access to a tap.

Husk: Wash your drinking bottle regularly – preferably in the dishwasher – to avoid bacteria.

☀️ Sun, summer and water

As the temperature rises, the body's need for fluids increases. Sweat production increases, and you lose both water and salts. If you don't replenish in time, you risk dehydration with symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, dizziness and reduced performance.

Good tips on hot days:

  • Increase your fluid intake – preferably 2,5–3 liters or more
  • Drink regularly – don’t wait until you’re thirsty
  • Eat water-rich foods (cucumber, melon, strawberries, tomatoes)
  • Use electrolytes if you sweat a lot
  • Avoid too much coffee and alcohol, which have a diuretic effect.

Fill your water bottle, listen to your body, and enjoy the summer with a body in top shape and lots of energy 💧☀️
