Many Danes lack vitamin D - do you?

Vitamin D is not just a “winter vitamin” – it is essential for a wide range of functions in the body. From bone health and muscle function to immune defense and cell division. Yet studies show that many Danes – especially women – have levels that are too low, and we should take this seriously.

Why is vitamin D so important?

Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and phosphate – minerals that are important for strong bones and teeth. It also plays a role in muscle strength, immune function and perhaps even cellular aging processes.

But: Vitamin D is primarily formed in the skin via sunlight – and this is a problem in a country like Denmark, where the sun in the winter months is not strong enough to ensure the necessary amount. This means that large parts of the population need to get vitamin D through diet or supplements in the winter months – and for some all year round.

Pregnant women should be extra careful.

As Woman.dk points out in an article based on medical sources, pregnancy is a period when the need for vitamin D increases, and when a deficiency can have consequences – for both mother and child (source).

Therefore, both the Danish Health Authority and the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration recommend that all pregnant women take a daily supplement of 10 µg of vitamin D year-round (sst.dk).

Vitamin D deficiency – not just a winter problem

But it's not just pregnant women who should be aware. There are also many women and men with levels that are too low – especially if they:

-Rarely stays in the sun

-Have darker skin (which produces less vitamin D)

-Protects from the sun in general

-Eating a diet without fatty fish or fortified foods

-Avoid healthy fats (which help absorb vitamin D)

Are you getting enough?

The official recommendation for adults in Denmark is 5–10 µg per day – but recent research indicates that 35–70 µg daily D3 is necessary to achieve optimal blood levels (> 75 nmol/l) in many adults.

Foods such as salmon, mackerel, eggs and fortified dairy products contribute – but it can be difficult to meet the need solely through diet.

Therefore, a daily supplement can be a simple and effective support.
